My Guitar Journey

I’ve been playing for so long that I have very vague memories of the time that I took lessons. I am very happy that I got into this instrument early on.

These days, my time is divided between learning new things, jamming with my friends, performing, and trying to build an electric guitar. I have most of the guitar building tools I need and I’m sure I’ll build one by August!

Like most guitarists, I started out on a cheap acoustic and fascinated by the sounds and possibilities of an electric, got one! Ever since I use lots of pedals and effects to shape my tone when playing my Tele. I don’t know if I could ever gig without a tiny bit of reverb!

My favorite styles to play are classic rock, metal and fingerstyle. I also like jazz but I’m not great at it, so that’s that.

In my 8+ years of guitar experience, I’ve gotten used to the process of choosing an amazing instrument and making it my own. There are many stupid mistakes that I’ve made when making the purchase. I have done every mistake I could’ve.

I’ve tripped on wires, forgot to bring my tuner at gigs, lost picks (well.. I like to think this is just something we  guitarists do a lot), blew up my amp, damaged a nut by filing improperly and damaged electronics by soldering wrongly! I am sure I could make a much larger list but this should give you an idea.

I’ve done many things wrong and I like to think that it has made me a bit wiser when it comes to guitar-related things.

Problems That I’ve Faced

Most of my guitar journey has been fun. I’ve been playing for many years and to this day, I am still learning new things.

I started out on a very cheap acoustic that cost me just 35$ when new. You may know that entry-level guitars these days do not come that cheap. I didn’t get mine for a bargain deal either.

I went to one of the many music stores in my town and picked one I liked. I had no idea how to play the thing or if I was getting a decent one. I was just too excited to get one.

Very soon, I realized that I’d gotten a laminated top with some crappy tuners that wouldn’t stay in tune. I do love that guitar but I also remember that it hurt my fingers every time I played. Anyway, I did learn a lot from that. I can do some tricky guitar repair and most of it I learned on the cheap acoustic.

Had I started out on a decent instrument, I am sure I would’ve learned much quicker.

Years later, when I finally switched to an electric, I was amazed at how good it sounded and felt. The Squier Strat I got was nowhere near a professionally set up instrument but it was quite good.

When I could play fast enough, I realized that I could go faster on a fretboard that actually allows me to.

I mostly use a Fender Tele these days as I’m hooked to the sound but I’ve had my fair share of buying guitars to find the perfect one for me. I use the Tele for practice as well as gigs and it’s very versatile.

I play lead, so I need all the punch I can get. I also play rhythm when jamming. Personally, I think the lines between lead and rhythm are blurred as your playing gets into the advanced territory. You’ll have put in the time practicing chords and scales and you will have excellent command over your fingers that grooving is effortless.

I learned theory and started memorizing the frets very early on, so I have no problem playing that classy Dorian or cool Myxolydian b6 anywhere on the neck. I don’t think a beginner can find much use out of learning modes but as you get better with your basic pentatonic scales, you’ll find drawn to modes.

I didn’t have any problems learning them as I’ve had amazing teachers over the years. I try to provide you the information you need hoping you too can have a happy learning phase!
